A Green New Deal without growth?
Time & Location
Over dit event
Over the past two years, the Green New Deal slogan has been adopted by many grassroots movements around the world and has captured the attention of the political class. The result is that everyone is talking about Green New Deal, but with little consensus on what it really stands for and whether it will be enough to stop climate catastrophe and ecological degradation.
Some see the Green New Deal as a vital instrument to stimulate economic growth, crucial to financing a large-scale overhaul of the energy system needed to avert runaway climate change. By contrast, proponents of 'degrowth' maintain that this type of growth makes it more difficult to accomplish emissions reductions, and argue for reducing the scale of energy use.
Dr. Riccardo Mastini (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) will weigh for us the strengths, weaknesses and possible synergies of these two prominent climate change mitigation narratives followed by audience Q&A.
